COME & TEACH

Someone has said “Find out what God is doing and join Him.” We are seeing God do some amazing things in Asia through both short and long term EMTs (English Ministry Trainers). By His grace we believe this will continue in the days and years ahead in places like Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China, India and beyond. Whether you are a college grad looking for an opportunity to serve overseas, a family in the middle of a career change or recently retired and looking for a way to invest your past experience with Asian young adults who are hungry to learn we invite you to join us we invite you to join us.

OPPORTUNITIES IN ASIA
SYME (School of Youth Ministries in English) trains Asian young adults (ages 20-30) in discipleship, youth ministry and English. The students come for 4-8 months. In Korea the year is divided into four 8-week terms. In Japan it is divided into two 12-week and one 8-week terms. All the classes at SYME are taught in English by short-term and long-term missionaries. Short-term missionaries, (also called EMTs - English Ministry Trainers), are normally college graduates or people with experience who are native English speakers and are able to teach a small group of 8-12 students. SYME is a ministry of Word of Life International (www.wol.org).

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
It will cost the price of a plane ticket (about $1300) plus about $811 per month per person. About $211 per month covers your short-term missionary insurance and administrative costs. $290 per month is given to SYME to cover your housing and meals (Tuesday - Friday). $310 per month is to cover weekend meals, travel and amenities ($165 of this is pocket money). This should cover all of your basic needs and even a little extra while you are here.

WHAT WOULD I DO?
Discipling: From Tuesday thru Friday you would help disciple a small group of about 10 students. You would check their Quiet Time diaries, facilitate a sharing time, eat meals with them and encourage them in their Christian faith and their English language learning. You would also be involved with a journaling ministry with several students, giving advice on everything from how to improve their English to how to know God better.
Training: Every day you would lead classes in simple English conversation, possibly reading, writing or pronunciation and facilitate an English Bible study class. The lesson plans for each of the 2-3 classes you would teach have already been prepared for you. The students are required to speak only in English. (If they say one word in Korean or Japanese they pay a fine of almost $1.00).
Weekends: On the weekends there are good places to shop nearby. Also Burger King, McDonalds, KFC, Subway, Pizza Hut, and even Baskin Robbins are within a 10-minute bus or taxi ride from the school in Korea and McDonalds, KFC and Subway are within a 15 minute ride in Japan. In Korea there are a couple good English-speaking churches nearby as well. In Japan we provide our own English service on Sundays.
You will have computer and internet access at SYME. Phone cards can be purchased to call back to America for about 10 cents a minute. A few cars for local transportation are available in Korea for those with an international driver’s license.

WHERE WOULD I LIVE?
In Korea unmarried short-term missionaries who come are usually provided with a private room in an apartment/dorm. The apartment has 3-4 bedrooms, two baths and houses about 10 students. 80% of our students go home on the weekends. Students from a long distance away usually stay in the apartment during the weekend. Married short-term missionaries can stay in a guest house which is a small efficiency apartment with a small bedroom, living room, dining room, bathroom and kitchen. All housing is within a 5-10 minute walk of SYME.
In Japan unmarried short-term missionaries who come stay in a dorm room with 2-3 other students. There is a common shower room with nice private showers. 90% of our students stay at SYME on the weekends. 21 meals are served in Japan each week. Married short-term missionaries can stay in a private guest room or in a small efficiency apartment with a small bedroom, living room, dining room, bathroom and kitchen. All housing is within a 5-15 minute ride of SYME.
